I have been in the place where I would only stick to a few different things, because I had no clue I could literally take a regular recipe and just make substitutions! I choose mainly vegan options, because my family and I do not eat dairy products. How Vegan Foods Promote Better Digestion
Before my true health journey began, I was eating whatever I wanted, but I had horrible digestive issues…constant bloating, random burning sensations, and constipation. I constantly dealt with this mental fog as well, not realizing it was all stemming from my gut health!
I soon realized I had a dairy allergy, and honestly it was much easier to ask for Vegan options at the places I went just to be safe. You wouldn’t realize the things they add dairy to, that you would never think would have it.
I started doing tons of research on how eating a more plant based diet led to better overall digestion and health. Vegan foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, etc. are rich in fiber, which in turn promotes good digestion by reducing the amount of sugar your blood absorbs. Eating plant-based foods helps healthy gut bacteria to flourish, and decreases inflammation in the body.
After implementing the necessary changes I quickly felt better! I wasn’t dealing with digestive issues, and the mental fog cleared. But, I felt limited to what I could eat…so next I went on the journey to widen the variety of vegan foods!
How to make substitutions to favorite recipes for a vegan option
I will give you a few tricks that I started with! I would always find yummy recipes, but did not always agree with the ingredients. Soon, I started playing with substitutions, and it was so much easier than I thought.
Here are a few of the things I use:
Milk→ almond milk or coconut milk (unsweetened)
Butter→ olive oil (it tastes SO much better honestly)

Tips For Losing Weight With a Vegan Diet
Tip #1- Stick with foods that are low in calories, but high in nutrients! You will not only feel energized and satisfied throughout your day, but you also won’t have to worry about counting calories. Here is a list from least to greatest calorie wise: vegetables, fruit, starchy produce, whole grains, and beans and legumes. Make this the majority of your meal, and add in high calorie foods sparingly-such as, avocado, seeds and nuts.
Tip#2- Focus on eating high fiber foods, which will make you feel full longer. Such as legumes, fruit, leafy greens, etc.
Tip#3- Limit processed foods. Don’t eat everything that looks yummy, just because it says vegan on the package! It is much better to focus on whole foods, and have these treats on occasion.
Tip#4- You will have to train your taste buds. You have to be strong in the beginning, and not give into all the cravings…it will eventually get easier. Your gut microbiome and taste buds eventually adapt to what you are eating. You will come to realize at the end of the process, you have new cravings!

Research has shown that a Vegan diet increased beneficial gastrointestinal hormones. These hormones are involved in regulating energy homeostasis, weight management, satiety, insulin secretion, and glucose metabolism.
Once I learned all of these things, and started living a mostly Vegan life, I am back on track to enjoying food again…and not viewing eating as a chore! This has helped me not only physically, but also mentally. When you feed your body the right foods, your mind will thank you!
